Small and Simple Things Every Day

Another week has past and I look back on this one as I have the previous six thanking the Lord for the many, many blessings that have been sent our way.  I have spent virtually every day with my dear wife and I go home each day always seeing something different in her movements that bring great hope and gratitude. I am honored to be her companion.

I get asked frequently how Sherrie is doing? My response is pretty much the same..."she is doing a little better each day" and she is! Some change is readily noticed while other changes are very subtle. Regardless, time is her ally as her brain heals and searches for new pathways to accomplish even the most simple movements.

The last two days we have seen her sit and hold herself longer than we have seen previously. We have seen her move her head a little more to her left side and track with her eyes. We see a number of small things that tell us she is on the verge of being more alert and ready to move on to the next level. While I wish there were a formula that could tell us how long this will go on, there is none. In the meantime, we will rely on each other for strength and have faith in the many blessings we have received along the way for they have brought great peace to us.

  1. Hi Sherrie,
I thought I'd tell you my earliest Labrum story.

When I was a young girl, 3 or 4 years old, my mother would take me with her to visit teach. I couldn't say why I remembered this person, because they didn't remain in my ward long, but one of the sisters she visited was named Janice Labrum. Not a common name, just one that stuck in my head. And I knew her husband had a short, one-syllable first name.

Fast forward to when I was 18 years old. I got a job at a temp agency, and my very first assignment was at American Scientific Products. I was supposed to be there for one week, filling in in the mail room. At the end of the week, they found more work for me in other departments, and ultimately I ended up working there that whole summer until I left for my freshman year of college.

One of the first days there, I met the BIG BOSS GUY. Ron Labrum was his name, and suddenly from the recesses of my brain I remembered visiting that Janice Labrum person as a very small child. "Is your wife named Janice?" I asked him. He told me that was his aunt (if I'm remember correctly), and her husband was Lee (I'd been right about the one-syllable short first name).

Anyway, that was my introduction to your family. I went off to college, met Brad my first semester, and when I came back from BYU and resumed working for what had become Baxter Healthcare by the next summer, endured Ron's teasing about me waiting for a missionary (he didn't think I would.) But I did, and then you moved, and he was Jon's counselor, and Brandon was David's best friend, and our families have been connected ever since.

I love hearing about your milestones, even if they seem like quarter-mile-pebbles. They all count. Keep up the great work. I look forward to talking to you again someday.
    Love, Julia Wright ♥

  2. When I saw the title of this entry, I asked myself, why would they write about me, small & simple? I'm glad I took the time to read on and realize it wasn't about me, but about something much more precious. We are all pulling for Sherrie and the family. Faith & miracles, that's where we're going here! Mike Smiley

  7. We haven't met, I met Brandon at BYU because I was roommates with Gena Ledbetter Johnson, my name is Tisha. Regardless of the fact that we haven't met in person, I feel like I know you and your entire family. Gena always talked VERY often and VERY highly of the remarkable "Sherrie Labrum" and after having known Brandon is it easy to know that such a genuine and fantastic person would come from phenomenal parents.

When Gena emailed me asking for prayers on your behalf, I knew exactly who you were and it was effortless to go to the Lord on your behalf. I just wanted to let you know that we are praying and fasting for you. I have four little girls ages 9, 6, 4 and 2 and when I put in a request for them to pray for someone they do so with consistent fervor. My 9 yr old and I fasted for you and your family today. My girls always ask after your progress and pray for it to continue. Keep it up, you legendary woman!! ;) By small and simple means shall great things be brought to pass. ((HUGS)) to you all.

    Very Sincerely,
    Tisha Grayson Hunt
