Sherrie's Big Day

Over the last few weeks Sherrie's therapy schedule gets busier and busier. The more alert she becomes, the more time she spends with the therapists. She works so hard every day. Today she started with an early morning doctors visit at NW Memorial to see her orthopedist to check on her hip fracture. He was very excited that she had healed so well and gave her the green light for therapists to begin getting her on her feet. Another wonderful blessing!

She came back to RIC and went through a full 4 hour schedule where she was alert almost the entire time. Her stamina is improving, she is using her arms more and even played a bit of catch with a beach ball. Movements for her are difficult, but she gets better with every passing day.

The really big news is that she had her trachea removed today! She had done so well over the past week they decided to remove entirely. Another blessing from heaven that will make it that much easier for her to use her voice.

I could go on and on about the many wonderful things that continue to happen. They are significant and they continue to remind me of how important faith and prayer are in this and every other journey we face in life. When I begin to feel down, I watch my dear wife work so hard to make progress and I then decide I too can press on. We are on this journey together and I am very grateful for her strength.

  1. I am so happy to hear that she is making so many great strides in her marathon. All things sound wonderful for today. I cant wait to hear that she starts speaking to you guys even if it's a "no" response to something; that only means "I love you" is shortly behind that!

    Thanks for the posts!

  3. Hi Sherrie! You are much on my mind and heart this morning. Both you and Ron and your whole family. Someone gave me the following poem recently and it has provided so much encouragement. As you step out into the "unknown"... all of you.... I hope these words will give you strength and encouragement. This poem was quoted by King George VI in his 1939 Christmas broadcast at the beginning of the second world war and brought much comfort and inspiration to many....

"And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown! And he replied: Go out into the darkness and put thine hand into the hand of God. That shall be to thee better than light and safer than a known way. So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East. So heart bestill; What need our little life our human life to know, if God hath comprehension? In all the dizzy strife of things both high and low, God hideth His intention. God knows. His will is best. The stretch of years which wind ahead, so dim to our imperfect vision, are clear to God. Our fears are premature; In Him all time hath full provision. Then rest: until God moves to lift the veil from our impatient eyes, when, as the sweeter features of Life's stern face we hail, fair beyond all surmise God's thought around His creatures our mind shall fill.

  7. Wonderful news on both the trachea removal and the repaired hip. The therapists green light to get Sherrie on her feet reminds me of a favorite quote...

  8. We're so glad she is doing so well. We read the posts whenever there is a new one and keep all of you in our prayers. Sherrie is a wonderful person and an example to all of us. She has been so kind to us and has made us feel like her friends. I keep thinking of when she came over to pick something up and she came in my kitchen and played with my boys for a few minutes. She is a perfect example of Christlike love.

    Love,

  10. We are so excited with all the progress Sherrie is making. I love the Olympics and have been watching some things on my computer leading up to this year's event. We don't have television right now. As I see stories about previous champions, many of whom have overcome adversity and struggles to get where they are, such as Kerrie Skruggs who did her vault with a sprained ankle and got the gold for the US team, the Japanese man who was in an internment camp in California during WW !!, sickly and small, and started weight lifting in that desert heat and continued later, took gold in wieghtlifting, and on and on, I can't help but think of Sherrie. She is a champion and adversity will not stop her. We are grateful to be part of her team cheering her on. God bless all. The Breillatts
