Another Blessing...

We have been busy planning for Sherrie to come home July 24th. Trying to determine all that will be needed to care for her as been daunting. All you know is that nurses stay pretty busy taking care of your sweetheart's needs and soon you will be responsible for figuring out how to take over. Thinking about all that needs to be done has brought me to my knees many times. Gratefully, we have been blessed to have new insights and peace as we take things one step at a time.

Part of the plan is to be fully trained on all aspects of care including feeding, personal care, med delivery, transport, occupational, physical and speech therapy. To get up to speed, we have a long checklist of activities that need to be signed off as show proficiency. Brittney and I have spent two full days going through a portion of this qualification process while praying that her progress would continue so that her discharge date would be extended.

Tuesday we arrived for our early morning training and were informed that her discharge date was changed to Aug 6th. The doctors and therapists have been impressed with her progress and want to keep her longer. We are so very grateful for Heavenly oversight.

We continue to see greater awareness everyday.  She is moving her mouth more and from time to time will give us an audible "no'. Over the last week she has shown that her preferred method to communicate is nodding her head "yes" or "no". The other day the therapist asked if she wanted to listen to country music. She nodded her head NO!  I was crushed.

We will continue to prepare ourselves for the day she comes home. In the meantime, we will  pray for her continued progress. She is an amazing lady!

  1. Dear Labrum family. You probably don't know me, as I am fairly new to the Gurnee 2nd ward, and I have never met Sherry. I have met some of the family and I was impressed from day one with your kind and giving nature, as well as the smiles and friendliness towards a stranger. I heard in Sacrament meeting of Sherrie's accident and have been praying for your family ever since. Sister Spencer told me about this blog.

I read this blog and finally decided to write. I want you to know that I am continually amazed at the way your family handles this situation and the boundless amounts of love you have. Many in this situation, I would like to think not, but probably me, might not have such grace, faith, and humility. You continually amaze with with your faith and your ability to pass that on to others. You are teaching through your adversity.

I am an investigator and I can't think of a better witness as to the blessings that come to those who believe. Thank you so much for sharing your struggles. I pray that your family will continue to find strength in the Lord and each other and that Sherrie continues to improve.

I thank you for your incredible example and I strive to have the deep faith and commitment that you have shown.

    With love and gratitude,
    Lynne VanHorn

  4. Sherrie (Labrum family, please forgive me for going over your head to the CEO of the family!),

I know you LOVE music and I have taken on the challenge to be more physically fit since your accident happened. Your physical fitness coupled with the strength of your family has brought you to the point you are and continue to push you. As I train for the Jiggle Butt Run (in January) I have my battery of songs that I run with. You come to my mind every time I get winded but know I need to keep going, but one song in particular pumps me up and reminds me of you and your fight. It's called The Fighter. It was originally done by a group called Gym Class Heros but I like the remix done by Jason Chen better. The link for his performance of that is on youtube.com at this link:

I hope you like it enough that you add it to your playlist of "fight" songs!

I miss you guys and pray for you nightly and never go to bed without checking your blog. You are my hero!

    Love you,
Regina DeDominicis -- it's HOT in TEXAS today!

  6. Hooray for progress!!! We have been praying Sherrie will be able to stay as long as possible and reap the benefits of all the therapy available to her. We are so proud of Sherrie's efforts and thankful for the people working with her. We also pray for each family member that you will be able to bear your individual burdens, make wise decisions, and be comforted in the lonely times. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. We have great love and respect for your family. Love, The Cluffs.

  7. We continue to be thrilled with Sherrie's progress and to pray for all of you. The Ghana temple is closed the whole month of July for improving the airconditioning and adding another pane to the stained glass windows to allow less humidity to enter and cause mold build up. We miss it. Last night we had an unforgettable experience with Alex Boye, a black man who sings with the Tab Choir. I have often noticed him there, who could miss him, but had no idea he is such a fantastic performer in his own right. He says he sings with them to remind the world that this is a world wide church, not an American, not a white. His concert was such fun, and also so faith filled. It must hae been a thrill to him to look out in the packed audience, many of whom were not members, and see the beautiful black faces filling the hall. He often mentioned he felt like the only black in Utah at times. His roots are Nigerian - and he said he felt like he had come home. What a blessing the gospel is to all people throughout the world. We love you, Sherrie, and the whole family. Our prayers are with you every day. God bless you, the doctors, nurses, therapists, and all who work with Sherrie. We look forward to seeing her smiling face when we return home. Love, The Breillatts
